Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is a 2013 Bollywood action comedy film directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The film features Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz in the lead roles, and was released on 20 September 2013 to a mixed to positive response from critics. Vishwas Rao (Shahid Kapoor) is raised by his mother (Padmini Kolhapure), who hopes that her son will grow up to be a Police Inspector. Vishwas, though, wants to become a film hero. After helping out social worker Kajal (Ileana D'Cruz) whilst dressed as a Police Inspector for a photo shoot, she mistakes him to be an Inspector, and he plays along. After travelling to Mumbai to pursue his acting career, he is mistakenly published in the newspaper as an Inspector, which his mother sees. She arrives in Mumbai to see her dream come true, and circumstances lead Vishwas to carry on his lie not only to Kajal, but also to his mother. Vishwas mother comes to know that is not an inspector while he is shooting for the film. She falls faint and is admitted to the hospital, where the doctor tells him that she needs to be operated. He agrees to work for Gundappa for the agreement of getting money for his mohter's operation. While escaping after the job he is caught by police and accidentally shoots the police officer has been admitted to a hospital from a gunshot wound. He tries to save her and discovers that she was caught in the crossfire of a gang led by Gundappa. Vishwas then receives word from his commissioner that he must use an explosive watch device while taking on Gundappa's gang with help from real police teams. Along the way, he is forced to deactivate a bomb with Kajal. Vishwas deactivates the bomb before the time runs out, defeating Gundappa. He later tells everyone that he wants to become an actor and sees his dreams finally fulfiled. The film has often been termed as a full-on "masala" commercial entertainer. Other than the casting and genre, the makers refused to divulge further details. In early August 2012, it was confirmed by director Rajkumar Santoshi that he had been offered the film along with actor Arpit Sharma and that he had been in talks for the previous six months.[citation needed] Soon after, when asked, Kapoor confirmed he had not yet signed on for the film, but was on the verge of doing so.[citation needed] It was also reported at the time that actress Diana Penty had been signed on as the female lead, though Ileana D'Cruz later replaced her.[2] Actress Padmini Kolhapure has been signed on to play the role of Kapoor's mom in the film. It was later revealed that newcomer Deepika Kamainah will play an important role alongside Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz.
